“Just Do the Right Thing!”

Two of the most successful marketing phrases/slogans ever had just three words each, and shared the first word.  Can we adopt a similarly brief biblical mantra from the New Testament which can also help to inspire us to live godly lives?  I think perhaps we can....

Proofs of Biblical Inspiration

If someone were to ask you, "Why do you know the Bible is really inspired by God?", what would be your answer?  Please understand that "Because the Bible says its inspired" is only going to receive a charge of "circular logic."  So what else do you have as a basis for your faith in the Bible's inspiration?  Perhaps this lesson will help.

Is God Really FIRST in Your Life?

We all seem to think that "time" (or more properly, "the lack of time") is a major difficulty for us.  It isn't.  Especially in regard to spiritual matters, we don't have a "time" problem, we have a "priority" problem.  This lesson will hopefully help to understand this concept, and therefore help us to be able to get our priorities back where they should be.

The Pageantry of Paganism

This particular PowerPoint lesson is a "re-work" of one I did several years ago.  The title and premise are the same, as well as a couple passages and points, but the bulk of the sermon has been completely revised.  It deals with apparent tendency of mankind to appeal to his own senses in his so-called worship and devotion to God.

“Excel Still More” - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

“Excel Still More”

The church at Thessalonica receives some of the highest praise given any body of believers in the New Testament.  In Paul's first epistle to them, he highly  commended them throughout the first ten verses or so of chapter one.   And yet, despite all this apparently well-deserved praise, he also urged them to "excel still more" twice in chapter four!   The point of this lesson is that despite how well things are going right now here at Southside, we had better not become complacent, apathetic, lazy, or self-satisfied, but instead likewise "excel still more"!

“Where Two or Three Are Gathered”

This is not a lesson which details how God is present even when only two or three Christians come together to worship.  It is not a lesson about such because that is not what Matthew 18:20 is about- despite the many times it has been used that way.  This is a lesson about teachings of  Matthew 18:1-20 in context.  It is hoped that a study of the proper and necessary context of these verses will help us to understand all of them more clearly.

Restoring the Fallen- Bearing One Another’s Burdens - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Restoring the Fallen- Bearing One Another’s Burdens

This lesson has a dual purpose: 1) to use two passages from Galatians 6:1-10  (specifically, vv.6.10) to show how lifting a verse from its context lends itself to completely wrong interpretation(s), and therefore, application(s); and 2) to do a semi-expository lesson on this passage to mine its "wealth" with regard to restoring a fallen brother to faithfulness.

(Special appreciation to my long-time friend and part-time mentor, Bro. David Smitherman, for a fine article on this passage which both inspired and guided my thinking on the text and subject.)

“The” Church and “This” Church

Although the lesson is specific to the members of the Southside congregation regarding their attitude and involvement in "this" (and thus their) church, it could be easily adapted to fit any congregation.  The basic premise is that "The" Church (in the Universal sense) belongs to Christ, but "This" Church belongs to the members, Elders, and Deacons here as stewards of the Lord.  The obvious implication is that every member is thus responsibile for its success or failure.

Proper Motivations

This lesson is really the conclusion of several recent sermons and articles on Unity, Self-Reliance, Grace,  Liberty (Law, License, and Love with Attendance and Modesty as examples), and Giving.  As a few of these mentioned improper motivations, or ways we attempt to improperly motivate one another to do the right things, I thought it best to finish-up these thoughts with a lesson outlining what should be our proper motivations for Giving, Attendance, and Modesty.

The Giving of Our Means: Is it really “commanded”?

This is not a lesson on the proper motivations for saints to contribute to a church treasury per se.  It is a lesson that takes a serious and somewhat detailed look at how we in the church have presented this aspect of our faith.  The primary question of the lesson, posed in the title, pertains to whether or not giving is actually commanded.  My answer, based on the teaching of the N.T., is "no."

Our Problems with Grace - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Our Problems with Grace

In the title and in this PowerPoint lesson, by "our" I mean to include: we brethren here at Southside; brethren of the Church as a whole; and all who desire heaven as our home, believe in God of the Bible, accept Jesus as His Son, and are reasonably concerned with living a Christian life.  By "problem" I don't really mean the definition of grace, or even our concept of it necessarily.  I do mean our difficulties with what the N.T. says about when, where, and to what extent it will be applied by God. It is hoped that this lesson will help.

Imitating Jesus to Godliness - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Imitating Jesus to Godliness

Although there is considerable information available in the Gospels relative to the birth of Jesus, and there is also abundant information there of His life after His baptism until the ascension, there is very little given in the sacred text regarding His life in between these first two and last three years. A notable expception is found in the story of His being in the Temple at twelve years old discussing the Law with the teachers there.  The only other biblical information available from this "in-between period" is found in Luke 2:52-53.  But in this passage is found a formula for becoming "godly" that we would do well to imitate.

“Double, Double Toil and Trouble” - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

“Double, Double Toil and Trouble”

The title is taken from the chant of the three witches as they stir the cauldron in Act IV, Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”  The rest of the line is “Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.”  I’m certainly not advocating Bill Shakespeare’s fictitious concept of witches and cauldrons producing problems in our lives, but do you ever feel as if you’ve received more than your share of difficulties?  Or to switch metaphors, that “Murphy’s Law” was written about you?  Does it seem as if anything possibly could go wrong, it does?  Then perhaps this lesson will help.

“Right” but not “Radiant” - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

“Right” but not “Radiant”

The church at Ephesus stands unique among all of those mentioned in the New Testament. No other church can be followed through the text quite so completely. We see its beginning (Acts 18 -19), its growth and development (Ephesians), and its atrophy, warning, and prescription (Rev.2).  There is simply not other church which can be so openly laid bare for examination in the Scriptures.  As such, there are many lessons to be learned- we will only scratch the surface in this study.  Specifically, we will attempt to understand exactly what was the "first love" which the Ephesians had left.  (Some 25+ years ago, I heard Bro. Larry Bilbo describe the church at Ephesus as "Right, but not radiant"- that apt description has stuck with me from that day till this.)

What Does One REALLY Need to Know Prior to Baptism? - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

What Does One REALLY Need to Know Prior to Baptism?

From time to time I’m either asked, or it comes up in conversation, the question of our title.  Sometimes, the question is asked in the context of a church member trying to encourage someone to become a Christian.  What they really want to know is at what point one “knows enough” to be baptized. I thought we’d spend a few minutes reasoning through a few things this evening that will hopefully help to answer these questions.  It is also hoped that lesson will provide a concise, but complete, rendering of "teaching points" on which those attempt to bring others to Christ can effectively focuse their efforts.

That's probably a poor title to describe this Word file outline.  The lesson is taken from Genesis 1 & 2, and centers around two inter-related questions: 1) Why did God created man? and, 2) Why did God create man as He did?  It is not nearly as deep and philosophical as it perhaps sounds, but does provide some well-reasoned and scripturally sound answers to these important questions.

Matthew 7:1-5 is one of the most-often misunderstood (and misquoted and misapplied) passages in the New Testament.  Though it is abused by the religious masses to suggest that it is wrong to "judge" anyone regarding their thoughts or conduct in spiritual matters, it is also misunderstood by many brethren as well.  It is hope that this PowerPoint lesson will help all to better comprehend and obey the instructions contained in the passage.  (Acknowledgments to my Brother in the Lord, Gary Henry, for his excellent article "Benefit of the Doubt" which inspired this lesson, and from which it was adapted.)

God’s Eternal Plan for Saving Man - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

God’s Eternal Plan for Saving Man

Brethren have for many years spoken of God’s “Scheme of Redemption.”  Although I’ve used the phrase also, I never really liked it.  To me, a “scheme” was a devious or surreptitious plan to accomplish something underhanded- as in “a money-making scheme.”  So, I did a little word study.  The word “scheme” does not appear at all in the KJV New Testament, but it does occur three times in the NASV- 2Cor.2:11; Eph.4:14; and Eph.6:11.  In all three instances, it refers an evil purpose/plan or trickery of Satan!  Therefore, “scheme” probably isn’t the best word to describe God’s eternal plan for saving man!  This outline does, however, seek to follow this plan through the first six chapters of Paul's Epistle to the Romans.

Desiring a Better County - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Desiring a Better County

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith; v.6 further explains it; and pretty much the rest of the chapter provides examples of faith.  But in a couple of places, such as vv.13,39, it is emphasized that these men and women of faith died without receiving the promised reward of faith.  The reason is simple: the reward of faith is the spiritual reward of heaven, not a physical reward that can be obtained while in the flesh.  But what is emphasized in the text is that these people understood this concept because they were seeking a better country!   This lesson examines, from the specific text of Hebrews 11:13-16, what enabled them to be so faithful.

As much as our world constantly changes, there are certainties given in the Scriptures which should cause us to both soberly stop and think, as well as celebrate the salvation afforded us through Jesus Christ.  This lesson takes a look at a few of these sobering and celebratory certainties.

Giving Peter Credit - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Giving Peter Credit

The story of Jesus walking on the water has been a favorite of folks young and old for centuries.  It baffles the mind and bolsters the imagination.  But it seems to me that we've failed to give Peter enough credit for his part of this narrative.  We tend to only remember his sinking due to what the Lord called, "little faith."   But Peter deserves better credit than that!

Positive Christian Attitudes - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Positive Christian Attitudes

One of the most abused/misused passages in the New Testament is, Phil.4:13, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me."  This passage is not talking about climbing mountains, winning ballgames/championships, becoming a CEO (or better employee / employer), finding Mr. Right, avoiding Mrs. Wrong, winning the lottery, overcoming personal tragedy, accomplishing some feat of human endurance, landing a big job, or even becoming a top motivational speaker.  From the context, it is talking about being “content in whatever circumstances I am…” vv.10-12.  Isn’t it ironic that the passage used to promote the idea of overcoming some personal challenge is actually promoting the principle of being content with the situation as it is?

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Every kid has heard the question of our title, and every grown-up has asked it.  It is usually not as much a request for information as an effort to make conversation with someone with whom you are out of touch, unfamiliar, and perhaps more than a little uncomfortable.  It is unlikely that in asking we really expect "grown-up" answers.  But it is not necessarily a bad question- especially considering some of the apparent goals of some folks these days....

Though not necessarily in this order, we have recently covered "The Basics" of The Power of God's Word, Repentance, Confession, and Baptism.  While these are vitally important to becoming a Christian, and some of them are essential to maintaining a continued relationship with God, it seemed that we should also spend a few minutes on "The Basics of Faithful Living"- or, staying in fellowship with the Almighty.  Such is the purpose of this lesson.

True Repentance - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

True Repentance

Passages such as 1John 1:8,10 and Jas.3:2 make it clear that Christians, though purchased and saved by the precious blood of Christ, still sin- and therefore still need to be able to repent.  It is not, therefore, a “once for all time” act that we perform when we initially come to Christ. There is a continual need for repentance in our lives as long as there continues to be sin in our lives....

We either control and determine our attitude, or it controls and determines us.  While we may not be able to control all of the circumstances and situations in life, we do choose how we respond to them through our attitude.  Developing and maintaining a positive Christian attitude is therefore paramount determining "how" we live here, and "where" we live hereafter.

Mistakes We Preachers, Elders, and Churches Have Made Over the Last Four Decades

This is neither a "See, I told you so" lesson, nor any kind of scathing rebuke of individuals, churches, or the brotherhood.  Instead, it is a collection of observations I have made over this time period regarding things which I think we could have and should have done better in the administration of the Gospel.  These come from my own experience, and are matters about which I feel that I've been part of the problem(s).  Although this was originally intended to be only one lesson, it had to be subdivided into two, or perhaps three of them (they will be forthcoming in the weeks to follow, and will bear the same title).  Please read the introduction first, as I hope it conveys my reasons for writing such a lesson, and the spirit in which it was and is given.

Defining “Faith”

"Faith" is typically defined from Hebrews 11:1, and there is certainly nothing wrong with this.  But, as with any creation of God, if we are to truly define and understand it, we must comprehend the purpose God intended for its object.  Thus, this lesson seeks to define "faith" by first understanding "man" as the intended object God had in mind for it.

We can read "The Platform of Unity" from Ephesians 4:4-6 several times a day but will never be unitied unless we incorporate the attitudes and activies of Ephesians 4:1-3.  Still yet, if we fail to see the "connections" and interwoven nature of these individual "planks in the platform," we'll probably never be able to understand them, let alone live them in any kind of way that would produce biblical unity.  This lesson hopes to help in that endeavor.

Good Counsel

There are two "Unfortunate Realities" regarding how many of us seek to deal with temptation/crisis: 1) Many of us turn to God and His Word only after we've gotten ourselves in trouble, instead of before; and 2) Some of us turn from God and His Word when we encounter trials and tribulations.  Given these realities, what should we do when we are contemplating a serious situation, or trying to extricate ourselves from one?  This Word outline suggests that we ask and answer three important questions....

Erroneous Views of the Local Church - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Erroneous Views of the Local Church

Sunday two weeks ago, we spoke about the Purpose of the Church- that it was to be pillar and support of the truth; that by being the fruit of God’s eternal plan to save man, it makes known the manifold wisdom of God; and that it is to be that glorious, spot and wrinkle free, blameless and beautiful Bride of Christ whose love and devotion cannot be questioned or impeached. These are somewhat lofty-sounding goals.  While I tried my best to explain it in that lesson, there were some things regarding our view of the Church in general, and ourselves as a part of it specifically, that have continued to “nag” at me.  I fear that we may not yet have a complete picture in our heads of what God expects us to be and do.  I fear I may not have completely brought into focus some things that we may need to “see” to be what God wants us to be...

The Ten Commandments - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

The Ten Commandments

I think the next time someone says to me, "If everyone would just obey the Ten Commandments, the world would be a better place, and we could all go to heaven when we die," I will reply with something like, "Really?  I never knew you were Jewish and had rejected Jesus Christ as the Messiah!"  Then, when they are again able to get their lower jaw to close, I will see if I can explain that the Ten Commandments were a part of God's Law for Israel, and as such, were a binding covenant between them and God from Mt. Sinai only until the cross of Jesus Christ.  This PowerPoint lesson endeavors to make it clear that no one is "under" the Ten Commandments (or any other part of the Law of Moses) today, but that all are instead subject to the Law of Christ.

“For God’s Sake!”

Have you ever thought about what these words really mean (herein lies the problem)?   What does “For God’s sake” or “For heaven’s sake” mean?  Turn them around a bit and reconsider.  “For the sake of God” and “For the sake of heaven” literally refer to some thought or activity that is the product of a desire to put God’s (or heaven’s) interests above our own, do they not?  Though it is not how these phrases are typically used, they do convey the right way to think and act!

What is the Purpose of the Church? - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

What is the Purpose of the Church?

Psychologists tell us that one of the “triggers” for depression occurs when our day to day activities are viewed as having little or nothing to do with achieving or making any progress toward our overall goals and objectives.  Obviously, having an overall goal or objective (aim) in life has much to do with this.  But this lesson is not about depression, or having and achieving physical goals in life.  Instead, I would like you to think in these terms:  What is the purpose of the Church?  If we are to achieve the overall purpose God intended for the Church, shouldn’t we first have that objective clearly in view?

Roman Redemption- The Scheme of Redemption from Romans - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Roman Redemption- The Scheme of Redemption from Romans

This is a simple PowerPoint lesson which endevors to highlight "The Scheme of Redemption" entirely from the book of Romans.  "The Scheme of Redemption" has two major parts: sin salvation- both are revealed from the book.  Salvation likewise has two subdivisions: God's part and Man's part. Again, both are treated in this lesson as simply as possible, and only from the text of Paul's epistle to the brethren at Rome.

The “Inconvenience” of Christianity - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

The “Inconvenience” of Christianity

Unfortunately, our societal passion for “convenience” has crossed over to our religion and the practice of it.  Now we have come to the point that we don’t want our “Christianity” to inconvenience us or our lives either!  But Christianity is about change and conversion, not convenience.  True change and conversion, in spiritual terms, are often uncomfortable and difficult, and therefore necessarily inconvenient.

“Serial…” - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

“Serial…”

[Special Note: This is not a typical sermon or bible lesson, but it is hoped that my editorializing will help us "see" the scriptures, ourselves, and one another more clearly.]

The word "serial" is defined and utilized in a variety of ways.  In this lesson, one particular defintion- "belonging to a series maturing periodically rather than on a single date," guides the study and comparison of physical and spiritual maturity.

The Parable of the Unrighteous Steward - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

The Parable of the Unrighteous Steward

In Luke 15, Jesus addressed three parables to the "Pharisees and scribes" (The Lost Sheep, Coin, and Sons).  But in Luke 16, He turns His attention "the the disciples," and delivers to them The Parable of the Unrighteous Steward.  This parable is preplexing to some, but is actually a much-needed lesson for us today when it is correctly interpreted and applied.  Hopefully this outline does both.

What Do We Do About Our Sin? - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

What Do We Do About Our Sin?

Romans 3:23 makes it clear that all have sinned.  But it is also true that Christians sin after their conversion, 1John 1:7-10.  So how we deal with sin after our conversion to Christ is just as important as it was prior to our initial obedience to Him.  A few biblical examples from the Old and New Testaments are examined to demonstrate ineffective responses to sin, and then the proper reactions are shown from the text.

Laziness (Physical and Spiritual) - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Laziness (Physical and Spiritual)

This sermon outline examines three separate texts from the book of Proverbs which all deal with various aspects of the subject of "personal industry."   These lessons on laziness are easy to understand, and hopefully apply to none who claim to be Christians.  However, when we apply these same points to our work ethetics in spiritual matters, that may be another matter entirely!

Lights in the World - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Lights in the World

Jesus is "the light of the world," John 8:12; but Christians are expected to be "lights in the world, Philippians 2:15, by reflecting the light of Christ in our own little part of the world.  A single light- bright or dim, can do wonders in a dark place.  But the "illumination factor" is so greatly increased with a whole bunch of lights, even if they are but small ones.   As millions of stars cause one to give praise to the Creator in awe and wonder on a dark night, so too the reflection of Christ demonstrated in His people can do the same!  This sermon outline includes a couple of observations and applications to this end.

Avenues of Temptation - Southside Church of Christ | Jacksonville, Texas

Avenues of Temptation

This lesson is somewhat of a follow-up to "In the Days of Flesh".  In this previous sermon, a point was made from a couple of passages (1John 2:15-16 and Matthew 4:1-11) without really explaining them in any detail.  Though this lesson will still not do them the justice of full treatment, perhaps it will provide a little more substantiation for my previous use of them.  The primary point made was that Jesus was tempted in all the "avenues" or ways in which we are tempted, but was not faced with each and every temptation that any man of any time might face.  It is hoped that a better understanding of Satan's methods and means will better equip us to recognize and rebuff them.
