Origin and significance of names in general, and "Christian" specifically.
“Despised and Forsaken of Men”
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Obedience, Salvation, Isaiah
Isaiah 53 predicts much concerning the cruel rejection and death of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. This lesson takes a look not only at the ways in which Jesus was rejected then, but also how He is similarly rejected today.
Jesus Christ: A King Like No Other
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Faith, Obedience, Isaiah, Matthew, Mark, Colossians
This lesson was preached at the Timberland Drive Church of Christ in Lufkin, TX to the adult class of their Vacation Bible School. I do not usually post sermons that I preach in other congregations, but some in attendance were interested in having a copy of the PowerPoint. The assigned topic was "The Virgin Birth of Jesus" and the theme to which it was to be related was "Jesus as King". Thus, this sermon was my attempt to meet their goals for the class on that occasion.
Is Your Name “Christian”?
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Salvation, Proverbs, Isaiah, Acts, 1 Peter
Names are important- especially those which identify and accurately describe the named. "Christian' is supposed to accomplish both of these purposes. Do it do so for you? This lesson takes a look at the three occurrences of "Christian" in the New Testament in order to better understand how to be one.
The Effects of Atheism
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Apostasy, Atheism, Choices, Psalms, Isaiah, Romans
This lesson, though complete alone, is closely connected to and a companion of the sermon, "Does God Exist?" It treats Atheism as a "Cause" and identifies the "Effects" it has produced in our society.
Do You Really Believe in “Hell”?
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Proverbs, Isaiah, Mark
I have become convinced that most people either: (1) don't believe that "hell" really exists; or (2) don't believe that it exists in the form and for the duration depicted in Scripture. But it should be noted that realities are not subjective- they exist in real forms whether we believe and accept them or not!
Seeking the Lord

Can a man honestly and sincerely "seek the Lord" in the wrong way or place and find him anyway? "Seeking" sure doesn't work that way in any other application!
Man’s Problem of Perspective
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Deuteronomy, Isaiah, Jeremiah
Passages such as Jeremiah 10:23, Isaiah 55:8-9, and 1Corinthians 1:18ff all highlight the massive superiority of God's ways and wisdom over man's. No one who believes the Bible thinks man knows more or better about anything than God. But here's the question: Is man's problem of understanding one we inherited from creation, or, are there things we do or fail to do that either contribute or cause the problem? In other words, is it just "the way God made us" or can we do something to improve the situation? Perhaps a look back into the history of Israel will help to answer the question.
The “New Name” for God’s People
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Fidelity, Isaiah, Acts, 1 Peter
In Isaiah 62:1-12, three different verses either state or imply that a "new name" would be given to God's people during the Messianic Age. And yet, there seems to be no clear indication in the New Testament of exactly what that "new name" came to be, or is there? This Word file outline lesson attempts to tackle the question, as well as to provide some insights as to the importance of this "new name."
