This short lesson was given just prior to our Elders here at Southside addressing the congregation relative to the selection and appointment of additional Elders. It deals with the necessary interaction of Shepherds and Sheep to accomplish the Lord's work. It is a brief outline in Word format.

This article was published in our local church bulletin to acknowledge our appreciation for the years of service given to the Lord and the congregation by Allan Balch in our Eldership. Allan resigned recently due to his declining health.

The names God called the office of an "Overseer" also tell us much about the function of it.
Qualifications of Elders
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Elders, 1 Timothy, Titus, 1 Peter
Unfortunately, the lists given in 1Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1Peter 5 are often viewed by some as "disqualifications" despite being typically referenced as "qualifications." This usually belies the intent and purpose with which they are viewed. Such ought not to be the case. That being said, these qualifications are crucial to selecting the right men to this important responsibility.

This lesson is the "catch all" for some miscellaneous, yet important, considerations concerning the selection and appointment of Elders.
Elder Expectations: What We Owe Those Whom We Select
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Commitment, Obedience, Elders, Psalms, John, Hebrews, 1 Peter
If we are faithful to God's word in seeking, selecting, and appointing men to "watch for our souls," and we certainly should be so, then we also ought to understand the responsibilities the Scriptures lay upon us toward them. This lesson has exactly that purpose.
What Elders Can’t Do For Us
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Elders, Acts, Galatians, Ephesians, James, 1 Peter
It is God's plan for the Church that it be scripturally overseen by Elders. However, in all fairness to these men, there are some things they just can't do for us.
The Duties of Elders
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Elders, Jeremiah, Acts, 1 Timothy, Titus, 1 Peter
Before we should ask or expect anyone to perform a task for us, we ought to know full well what this task is that we ask them to do. We therefore need to know what an Elder is required by God to do before we select and ask someone to do it!
Deacons 1- The Meaning and Duties of the Office
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Elders, Deacons, 1 Timothy
This lesson is the first of two regarding the selection and appointment of Deacons in the local congregation. It emphasizes the meaning of the term, and by implication, the duties of the office. It also deals with some common misconceptions regarding the position. (This lesson is adapted from an excellent outline by Frank Jamerson in his workbook "Elders & Deacons and Their Wives"; pp.27-28)
Deacons 2- Their Qualifications
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Elders, Deacons, 1 Timothy
Since three lessons were recently given on the qualifications of Elders, and many of the qualifications for the office of Deacon are the same, limited attention is herein given. This in no way de-emphasizes the office or the qualifications for it- instead we just acknowledge the avoidance of redundancy.
