This lesson is the first of two regarding the selection and appointment of Deacons in the local congregation. It emphasizes the meaning of the term, and by implication, the duties of the office. Since three lessons were recently given on the qualifications of Elders, and many of the qualifications for the office of Deacon are the same, limited attention is herein given. This in no way de-emphasizes the office or the qualifications for it- instead we just acknowledge the avoidance of redundancy.
