“God Spoke to Me”???
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Apostasy, Faith, Obedience, Deuteronomy, Jeremiah, 1 Corinthians, 2 Thessalonians
No doubt most folks have had a conversation in which the other person intimated that God had in some way spoken to them. There are two different "types" of people who claim that God speaks to them: 1) those who are trying to get fame, a following, and financing; or 2) those who really believe that God speaks to them. Does He? How do you know? How can we tell the difference between these two types? And what's the proper response to members of each group?
The Bronze Serpent (and the Great Physician)
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Apostasy, Faith, Obedience, Repentance, Trust, Numbers, Luke, John, Romans, 2 Thessalonians, James, 1 John
1Corinthians 10:11 makes it abundantly clear that New Testament Christians are supposed to learn important lessons from Old Testament examples. In fact, one of the examples given in the preceding verses is that of Israel being punished with "serpents" by God for their "trying" of Him, v.9. The original account is found in Numbers 21:4-9. The story contains a wealth of lessons and applications for us today. Jesus also utilized the narrative to teach Nicodemus what true, obedient faith is supposed to be in John 3:14-16; (see also v.36). This lesson attempts to take all of this in, as well as providing some historical and geographical background also.
Protection from Apostasy

Are you afraid of "apostasy"? I don't necessarily mean some sort of brotherhood variety- I mean your own personal falling away. Is such even on your radar screen of awareness? If not, 1Corinthians 10:12 should be noted, "Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall." But if you are at least aware of the possibility, and concerned about it, what can be done to prevent it? 2Timothy 3:14-17 has some fairly specific steps that we can and should take to protect ourselves.

“Fellowship” Builders and Breakers
Posted by Philip Strong | Categories: Church, Church Discipline, Matthew, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Thessalonians, Philemon
"Fellowship" (joint participation with God and with those who are God's) can be effective, or ineffective, Philemon 4-6. This Word file outline attempts to extract from this passage fundamental "building blocks" of fellowship; and conversely, to point out from other New Testament passages, attitudes and activities which "break" fellowship.
