The Power of “One”

This lesson utilizes the historical account from 2Kings 18 of the Assyrian king Sennecherib's attempt to force Hezekiah (king of Judah) to surrender to emphasize the "The Power of One" and how that power should effect our salvation as well.

The Storms of Life

Mosie Lister wrote what has become one of my favorite gospel songs, "Till the Storm Passes By."  In this beautifully inspiring song, he captures both the fear of the "storms of life" that we all have and with which we must contend, as well as the trust true believers have in God to keep the safe Till the Storm Passes By.  This lesson identifies several different forms in which these storms come, and the causes of them.  And of course, it focuses as well on the one Solution to them.

The Downfall of Israel- What ours and all countries ought to learn.

The downward spiral of death for the northern Ten Tribes of Israel began even before the nation was fully formed.  Decisions were made and actions taken early on that were the beginning of the end for the short-lived nation.  As we have been told so often, "History repeats itself" and "Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it." Such is true with our country and all others who make the same mistakes that they did. This lesson highlights individual attitudes and actions which led to the ultimate conclusion that "God removed Israel from His sight."  Heed the warning!

Terms of Salvation- Beware the 8’s!

If we understand (especially from the previous lesson on "Forgiveness") that we are completely and utterly dependent upon God for salvation, then we should also understand that we don't get to any way determine or control the terms of that salvation- obviously God does.  And yet, there are people all over who constantly seem to want to "pick and choose" what they want to do in order to be saved.  How arrogant and ridiculous!

Consistency is the Key

Have you ever split firewood the “old fashioned” way?  You know, the way where the “splitter” has a handle that is not attached to a hydraulic cylinder, but an ax or maul head?  Although I have sometimes used the gasoline/hydraulic kind, mostly I still use the other kind of handles to split our firewood.  When the boys were younger, they would see me bursting open the blocks and want to give it try.  Invariably, they would swing as hard as they could, and also just as invariably, they would miss the spot they needed to hit to get the wood to split. Such is not uncommon- I did the same thing when I was just learning.  But the trick is not how hard you hit it, but hitting it with consistency- meaning hitting the same place multiple times.  Otherwise, you wind up making more kindling splinters than firewood!   It occurs to me that many of us approach Christianity and our service to God the same way...

The Pageantry of Paganism

This particular PowerPoint lesson is a "re-work" of one I did several years ago.  The title and premise are the same, as well as a couple passages and points, but the bulk of the sermon has been completely revised.  It deals with apparent tendency of mankind to appeal to his own senses in his so-called worship and devotion to God.
